Shane Ireland was born in Ottawa and played junior footbal lwith the Ottawa Sooners junior t eam, so it was only natural that he was signed by the Ottawa Rough Riders as a free agent in 1984. Ireland was the defensive player of the year for both the Sooners and junior football in Canada in both 1982 and 1983. Ireland played 14 games over three seasons (1984-86) with Ottawabefore being released in July, 1986. Ireland was signed by Montreal in September, 1986 and released the same month after playing just two games with the Alouettes. Ireland signed with Calgary in March of 1987, but was released in May of 87 before playing any games for them. Ireland was then resigned by Ottawa in September, 1987.
